  Pul Ke Niche is the first book by Nick Sethi, an American photographer of Indian extraction. What is remarkable in Sethi’s pictures of the children and families living under a freeway in New Delhi is how they boldly avoid the usual traps of photojournalism in depicting these types of subjects – there are no sad faces, begging hands, or juxtaposing of rich and poor to illicit sympathy for the misery of this community. Even though they are clearly desperate blowing-the-lid off poverty in India would be pointless so instead you have a portrayal of the energy and spirit of these kids and the “wrongness” of their predicament illustrated in a series of often surreal scenarios.
